We’re taking the day off work today (which, these days, means we are taking a one-day holiday from income) to help the S.O. with the last matters of her Master’s (education) thesis equivalent and to afterward celebrate said completion. Inwood is the destination, one of the quieter neighborhoods in New York City, which means we are going to have a tough time finding places to eat. Even the always-resourceful Chowhound had little on Inwood short of residents’ mentioning that such-and-such place was not bad or that another one was acceptable. So why do people live there, we ask?
posted by Tk at 12:06 • • sealed in amberWe posted approximately two months ago about the IMS/ISC bid to become the administrator of the dot-org TLD, and ICANN has announced its preliminary results. The good news is that the Verisign-affiliiated Union of International Associations did not get the recommendation. However, the bad news is that IMS/ISC did not get it either, with the nod going to ISOC, a group not smiled upon by ICANNwatch.org (to be fair, any -watch group can be expected to take a generally negative view of the actions of the group it is -watching, but ICANNwatch seems to try to be evenhanded). According to that site, ISOC’s board is controlled by corporate representatives, the employers of whom buy their memberships in ISOC. Further, two of the members of ICANN’s board of directors have close ties to ISOC (though neither of them was on and evaluation team for this project). Still smells like day-old catfish to me, and if it does to you as well, please say as much at the site for public comment on transferring administration of dot-org (to which we would link if anyone would say where it resides).
