We’ve had a problem twice recently at work with IIS losing track of the IWAM user’s password.
The first time it happened, things were a little unpleasant, because we were making changes to the development machine, and every minute we worked on trying to fix the problem was a minute that the development team couldn't work on projects. Though MS has a KB article that got me out of the jam (KB article #Q297989), it was still unclear what had happened. The only action we had taken was to install the 1.1 version of Microsoft’s .NET framework on a Win2K SP4 machine, and kapowie!
The second time it happened, we were much wiser and immediately ran the synciwam script and we were back in business. This time, the action taken was to have created an application in a directory (not virtual), removed the application, and restarted IIS. Once again, kapowie!
Strange indeed.
UPDATE (4 May): Happened again, this time the events of note were that I manually killed the ASP.NET worker process as well as the dllhost running under the IWAM account. But then I had to reboot, so I dunno what gives. Still, fixing it was as easy as running synciwam and then iisreset.
Fx Popup Blocker on the Fritz
For some reason, the popup blocking in the latest bugfix release of Firefox isn't accounting for our exceptions. We have not yet tried rolling back to 1.0.2, nor have we tried stripping out extensions, but it seems pretty much tied to the new release.
